Breeding the Problem Mare by Artificial Insemination

چکیده
Horse breeding is the procedure by which an adequate number of sperm are deposited into the uterus of a “healthy” mare at the right time. Although semen deposition is performed in all breeds by natural cover (NC), it is often, and with increasing frequency, done artificially. Although the main difference between natural breeding and artificial insemination (AI) is the delivery method of semen into the uterus, many other factors determine the success or failure of the breeding. Therefore, natural breeding, if properly done, should not be considered a cheap alternative to AI. Many horse breeders are of the opinion that if the mare does not become pregnant by AI, turning her out with a stallion to be pasture bred or giving her a live cover will maximize the chances of establishing a pregnancy. In my opinion, a mare that fails to become pregnant by AI with good semen quality and does so by NC without human intervention, is an example of poor or inadequate breeding management by the personnel performing the AI. Our ability to differentiate between physiologic and pathologic conditions and to establish appropriate therapies is a hallmark of those of us that practice reproductive medicine and should be the basis for proper reproductive management. Breeding management includes (1) diagnostic procedures to determine the soundness for breeding of both male and female, (2) necessary therapies before and after breeding, and (3) determination of the optimal time for insemination. This paper will discuss some of the managerial procedures and address a few of the common problems that veterinarians encounter when breeding mares by artificial insemination.

Short communication BLASTOCYSTS PRODUCTION AND COLLECTION IN ALBINO SYRIAN HAMSTER USING SUPEROVULATION AND INTRAUTE- RINE ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION IN NON-BREEDING SEASON
In vivo blastocyst production and collection using superovulation and intrauterine insemination was established in albino Syrian hamsters. Twenty female albino hamsters were injected pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG, 25 IU) in non-breeding season and 48 h or 56 h later, 25 IU of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) were injected. Both groups were divided into two subgroups of natural mating...
متن کاملSperm Transport in the Mare Reproductive Tract: A Review
The objective of this study was to review the literature on sperm transport in the mare. During this process the sperm cells must reach the oviducts in order to fertilize the oocyte, but before reaching this site it must go through the uterus that is a hostile environment at this moment since there is an inflammatory reaction in this location that aims to eliminate excess spermatozoa and bacter...
متن کاملBreeding With Chilled And Frozen Semen
Artificial Insemination (AI) involves the introduction of sperm into the reproductive tract of the mare without natural mating. AI in the horse was first practiced long ago. Ancient Arabian texts describe how mares were successfully inseminated. In the late 18th Century, an Italian scientist took the idea up again. He performed a series of studies in which he placed stallion semen in the snow a...
متن کاملAnestrous Estrous Season Season Breeding Breeoing January June October Artificial Insemination / ~ Plasma L Assays Lambing
The influence of pregnant mares' serum gonadotropin (PMSG) on reproductive performance of sheep bred by artificial insemination (AI) was studied in the anestrous and estrous seasons. Ewes were treated with progestogenimpregnated intravaginal sponges in June and October. One-half of the ewes in each trial received PMSG at sponge removal and were inseminated 55 h after sponge removal. One-half of...
متن کاملP-84: Blastocysts Production and Collection in Albino Hamster Using Superovulation and Intrauterine Artificial Insemination in Non-Breeding Season
Background: Due to the seasonality reproduction of albino hamster (April to October in the Northern Hemisphere) and the need to produce blastocysts for research applications, producing and collecting blastocysts by natural mating in non-breeding season is complex in this species. In the present study in vivo blastocysts production and collection using super-ovulation and intrauterine inseminati...
